Spotlight on spinach: From baby leaf to big impact
From baby leaf to big impact
From salads to smoothies, spinach is a nutritional powerhouse. It is packed with iron, calcium, and essential vitamins. But behind this humble leaf lies a surprisingly complex growing challenge. Spinach is a notoriously tricky crop to cultivate consistently, especially in controlled environments. At LettUs Grow, it’s one of the crops that pushed our aeroponic technology to its limits, and helped prove its value.
The Spinach Challenge
Spinach thrives in cool conditions but has shallow, sensitive roots and a tendency to bolt under stress. In traditional systems, issues like inconsistent germination, low rootzone oxygenation, or high compaction can seriously hamper yield and quality. Root health issues that typically result in root rot and attack from Pythium, Phytopthera and other fungal diseases that prevent hydroponic growth at scale.
A breath of fresh air
Our Advanced Aeroponics™ system overcomes these hurdles by suspending spinach roots in a nutrient-rich mist, giving them perfect access to oxygen, moisture and nutrients; with no soil, no peat, and minimal water. It’s a precision environment where every input is optimised. Our ultrasonic atomiser system ensures roots stay healthy and exist in a dryer environment that leaves little chance for fungus to adhere to a root hanging in mist.
Enabling Commercial-Scale Baby Leaf Production
This stronger root development and health enables scale production of baby leaf spinach within a rolling bench system, achieving industry leading yields within conventional glasshouse systems. Due to the dry aerial environment and healthy root environment, our clients have evidenced an ability to achieve multiple cuts of spinach without negative impact on marketable yields.
Where Innovation Takes Root
As one of the first crops we trialed, spinach continues to showcase what’s possible when science meets sustainability. Whether it’s for glasshouses or integrated into vertical farms through our Aeroponic Rolling Benches™, this leafy green remains a benchmark for how our technology can enable new forms of commercial crop production to move under cover.
