Xylem transports water and dissolved minerals from the roots up to the leaves. The xylem cells form long, continuous tubes that facilitate water movement upwards, driven primarily by evaporation from the leaves, a process known as transpiration. Phloem moves sugars, amino acids, and other organic molecules produced by photosynthesis from leaves to other parts of the plant. Unlike xylem, phloem cells are alive but rely on neighbouring companion cells for metabolic support. Phloem can transport substances in multiple directions, depending on where nutrients are needed most. If you think about a wave on the shore where a spray comes off of it, that's the same that's happening here but at a microscopic level. So each atomiser is vibrating so fast that it's shaking the nutrient solution until it breaks apart, and that creates the nutrient mist that the plant roots grow down into,” Charlie demonstrated. They discussed how this benefits the roots by creating an optimum environment for them to grow efficiently: “These roots here really show the benefit of aeroponics - you can see these healthy, fluffy white roots. You get a really good surface area there, and they're able to capture the nutrients really effectively,” he added. After almost 10 years of development, academic trials, and performance validation from growers around the world, we are confident in our ability to make a real difference to salad production techniques and are scaling systems with growers worldwide. When Sally challenged the use of additional energy in these systems, Charlie explained: "The atomisers are powered by electricity, but it's a very, very small amount. In traditional systems, issues like inconsistent germination, low rootzone oxygenation, or high compaction can seriously hamper yield and quality. Root health issues that typically result in root rot and attack from Pythium, Phytopthera and other fungal diseases that prevent hydroponic growth at scale. A breath of fresh air Our Advanced Aeroponics™ system overcomes these hurdles by suspending spinach roots in a nutrient-rich mist, giving them perfect access to oxygen, moisture and nutrients; with no soil, no peat, and minimal water. It’s a precision environment where every input is optimised. Our ultrasonic atomiser system ensures roots stay healthy and exist in a dryer environment that leaves little chance for fungus to adhere to a root hanging in mist. Enabling commercial-scale baby leaf production This stronger root development and health enables scale production of baby leaf spinach within a rolling bench system, achieving industry leading yields within conventional glasshouse systems. This year was marked by the significant attention given to food and agriculture, more than has ever been seen at a COP in previous years. COP28 introduced its first thematic day dedicated to food and agriculture, emphasising their role in climate change, along with the introduction of the Agri-food Systems Summit in the Innovation Zone. This marked a step forward, particularly with the UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture - signed by 158 nations. However it is worth noting that the declaration is neither legally binding nor contains an actionable roadmap for the countries to follow. Looking for a route to bring hyper-localised produce to the city centre, the pair decided that container farms could provide the perfect solution for not only a research facility that looks to improve the nutritional benefits of the produce, but a fully functioning food production system to supply and benefit the wider community. The farm itself forms part of the FixOurFood programme, a leading food systems research collaboration led by the University of York. With a host of cafes, restaurants and shops within throwing distance of the farm, this location provides the team the ultimate litmus test in how urban vertical farms can best supply the local area. The farm operates using a dynamic model for growing produce, so instead of using the traditional system of growing the maximum yield possible, they only grow and harvest what the businesses need. The benefits of this are three fold: 1. No wastage: Controlled growing conditions and shorter growing periods of crops means that all the produce is used throughout the year, and crop spoilage is limited. 2. Use of non-arable land: Growing and harvesting crops in areas not traditionally used for farming, means no more land is taken away for agriculture. 3. However nutrients clog nozzles, so technical complexities and maintenance issues have prevented typical aeroponic systems achieving hectare scale. At LettUs Grow, we use ultrasonic aeroponics. This ground-breaking project aims to bridge the gap between the farming experience currently available within the prison system and the rapidly developing indoor agriculture sector - supplying prisoners with the knowledge they need to obtain employment once leaving the system. Prisoners here are able to hone their skills in traditional farming methods, harvesting fresh produce from polytunnels and market gardens all within the prison grounds. However, the agricultural industry doesn’t stand still for long. Our changing climate, unstable supply chains and technological advancements in indoor and vertical farming means that growers across the country are having to adapt, and fast. For them to be able to support the prisoners in their own development, the team travelled down to LettUs Grow HQ for a 2 day training course to gain first hand experience with aeroponics. The training included an introduction into both our DROP & GROW containers and Ostara farm management system, the basics of plant husbandry in aeroponics as well as HACCP and Food Safety regulations. The reality is that the growing population means an increased demand for food, so instead of farmers reducing their operations, they need to find a way to operate more sustainably. To help pave the way for an achievable route to reduce emissions and improve sustainability throughout the business, G H Dean & Co Ltd has been working with William Brandreth, an Environmental Accountant from the accountancy and advisory firm, Chavereys. William has been clear from the off-set that significant changes need to be made throughout the business, and indeed the industry, if growers are going to make a dent in both emissions and carbon capture.
